MULCH
ORGANIC vs ROCK vs NOTHING
MULCH - Is anything used on top of the ground as a covering (wood, bark, rubber, rock, pebbles, etc)

ORGANIC SHREDDED MULCH
-
Comes in fine ground and chunky (both are fine - NOT BARK)
-
Comes in different colors - Adding color and appeal to your design
-
Discourages weed growth
-
Holds moisture reducing the amount of water that evaporates from your soil, reducing watering needs
-
Insulates plants against hot temperatures and sun
-
Protects against weather elements and cold (Mulch after 1st FROST)
THE CONS
-
Does have to be refreshed or replaced every year or two
-
Old Mulch must be removed before applying new Mulch
-
Can attract insects and spiders
BARK MULCH
THE CONS
-
JUST DON'T DO IT
-
Robs nutrients from plants due to it taking too long to break down. Disrupts soil pH balance
-
Blocks sunlight from plant roots
-
Floats away if heavy rains
-
Uses too much Nitrogen. Creates Acid environment.
-
Does not look appealing. Big chunks. Not smooth
RUBBER MULCH
-
Does not degrade or loose color (Lasts forever)
-
Will not attract insects (good for next to house)
-
Discourages fungal growth as well as weeds
-
Very low maintenance
-
Does hold soil moisture
-
Rubber Mulch is NOT toxic to Pets or Humans
THE CONS
-
DO NOT use in Gardens
-
Does not look real. Looks more like rock
-
Sometimes holds too much heat (constant direct sun)
-
Does not stay moist like Organic Mulch; however, it does keep in ground moisture
-
THE BAD - Toxic to some plants and when breaking down, it releases heavy metals and chemical toxins into the soil and water
STONE MULCH
-
Decorative gravel or rocks ranging in size from pea-size to golf ball size, often sourced from river beds
-
Available in a wide variety of sizes, colors, textures and shapes
-
Lava Rock and Pumice Stone are best for water retention (porous)
THE CONS
-
DO NOT use in Gardens
-
Need to use landscape fabric underneath
-
Sometimes hold too much heat (direct sun)
-
Not good around plants/trees that prefer acidic environment. Rock creates an alkaline environment.
-
Apply pre-emergent herbicide (for weeds) every year in early spring. And again when weeds come up.
NOTHING - JUST DIRT
-
Weeds and other undesirables grow easily
-
No water retention. Soil dries out quickly
-
No weather protection for Plants
-
No nutrients from decomposing wood mulch (Organic Mulch, Bark, etc)
-
Does NOT look aesthetically appealing. Does not have a groomed look.
